Green cleaning. This is a topic that inspires people to do what they can to help protect our planet. But that isn’t the only benefit to going with a more eco-friendly approach. Products that use nontoxic (green) ingredients protect not only our home but ourselves. If certain chemicals are harmful to our atmosphere, than they are most assuredly bad for our lungs as well. There are many green products available for just about any aspect of home maintenance.
With that in mind, there are numerous ways to go green without breaking your wallet. You can minimize your environmental impact in plenty of places from using cloth instead of paper towels to making your own cleaning products.
How to clean your bathroom the green way…
  • Distilled white vinegar is a staple for cleaning in the bathroom, it removes soap scum and grease, banishes odors and inhibits growth of mold and mildew. Baking soda is another all purpose cleaner, it absorbs odor cuts through grease and its texture can scrub away even the most stubborn patches. Hydrogen peroxide can also be used due to its antiseptic properties.
  • A quick and simple tub scrub can be made with 1 2/3 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup castile soap and 1/2 cup water, followed by 2 tablespoons white vinegar. Mix thoroughly and apply to tub. Let mixture sit for five minutes before rinsing with water.
  • For mold and mildew problem areas simply spray with white vinegar, no rinsing is necessary. An alternative is 1/2 cup 3% peroxide with 1 cup water shaken together in a spray bottle. Again there is no need to rinse.
  • An effective tile and grout cleaner can be made of equal parts baking soda and vinegar. First spray down tile with vinegar and wipe with sponge, then apply mixture and let sit over night. Rinse and enjoy your sparkling bathroom.
  • Warning: If using peroxide wear gloves, peroxide is safe for the environment but can cause mild skin, eye and respiratory irritation. Keep out of reach of children.

Spring Cleaning Tips and Tricks by Kaela Fox

Dirty blinds? Foggy Windows? It’s a great time to start thinking about shaking off the dust and coming out of hibernation.

Now, whether you relish the idea of getting to freshen up your surroundings or dread the extra work, your friends at Maid O’ Matic hope these tips and tricks will help make spring cleaning quicker and easier than ever before.

With a few simple steps you will have brighter windows and blinds so you may enjoy the view.

  • Remove the blind from window and pre-spray your windows with a good commercial window cleaner. Wipe the window pane down with microfiber cloth or towel; it’s important to do this first so that you do not transfer dirt back onto the windows.  Windows can be tricky so it is a good idea to use vertical strokes on the inside and horizontal strokes on the outside. This technique makes it easy to identify streaking and make corrections as needed.
  • Use an old rag, an all-purpose cleaner or vinegar to wipe window frame off.
  • To clean window tracks, use all-purpose cleaner and a paper towel or rag wrapped around a flat head screwdriver or a tooth brush to scrub them out.
  • Use an old glove or sock to dip in vinegar and wipe blinds down, just stopping periodically to rinse off dust and apply more vinegar. (Do not over saturate wooden blinds.)

Rehang your blinds and you are done!

With warmer weather on the way, you are probably thinking about all the ash and soot you need to clean out of your fireplace.  We know that is not the easiest chore, but we have a few tips and tricks that will help to make the job easier.

  • Sprinkle damp coffee grounds over ash before sweeping to keep down dust.
  • Since the heat of the fire keeps the firebox clean, very little effort is needed to maintain it. Simply use a stiff bristled brush to gently scrub the inner walls.
  • Since most fire screens are painted black metal, simply mix 1\2 a cup of vinegar with a gallon of warm water than add a teaspoon of ammonia and then wipe the screen down with a cloth dipped in the solution and follow by rinsing with a cloth dipped in warm clear water. You’ll find that this mixture is also convenient for removing smoke stains from the glass enclosures.
  • To clean your grate and cast iron fireplace tools, take them outside and hose them down, sprinkle with an abrasive cleaner and scrub with a stiff bristle brush or a steel wool pad.

Always remember, it is important to employ a professional to clean your chimney and flue to get rid of creosote, a flammable tar like substance that can be a fire hazard.
